A private jet flying to the Gold Coast in south east Queensland has had a near miss with a Virgin Australia plane.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says it happened on Saturday over Armidale in New South Wales.

The ATSB says the Gulfstream jet was cleared to descend through the same level as the Boeing 737.

The Virgin plane was flying from Brisbane to Sydney.

The ATSB says it is still investigating.
