Hawaiian Airlines Plane Mistakenly Enters Runway at Kansai Airport in Western Japan
Oct. 13, 2011
A Hawaiian Airlines passenger plane mistakenly entered a runway at Kansai airport in western Japan Wednesday night, forcing a cargo jet due to land to rearrange landing, Kyodo News reported Thursday.
No one was injured in the incident involving two Boeing 767 planes, which occurred at around 9:35 p.m. local time, the report said.
The Hawaiian's Honolulu-bound Flight 450, with 208 crew and passengers aboard, proceeded onto the runway even though it had been instructed to stop at a taxiway halt line.
The All Nippon Airways cargo plane from Narita airport near Tokyo at the time was about 6.5 kilometers from the runway when it had to abort the landing. The controller told the Hawaiian plane to return to the taxiway before allowing the ANA cargo plane to finally land at around 9:45 p.m., the report said, adding that the Hawaiian flight took off about five minutes later.
The Japan Transport Safety Board, an arm of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, will investigate the matter and has dispatched three inspectors to Kansai airport.
